LWIR Lenses or Long-Wave Infrared Lenses are infrared lenses optimized for use from 8000 – 12000nm, the long wave infrared wavelength range. At Shanghai Optics we manufacture high performance LWIR lenses for applications ranging from medical to industry to security and defense.
Since LWIR lenses transmit light that is invisible to the naked eye, LWIR cameras have a wide range of important applications. Our lenses are used in thermal imaging systems to provide quality control in factories, to enable predictive maintenance in industrial settings, and to enable clear surveillance imaging in spite of smoke or fog. They can be used for gas leak detection, allowing potentially dangerous situations to be evaded before they become problematic. In medical applications, an LWIR lens and thermal imaging provides a non-invasive, reliable way to detect temperature change on a cellular level, enabling medical professionals to detect abnormalities and assess a wide variety of conditions, including breast cancer, brain tumor, diabetes, and burn trauma.

At Shanghai Optics we understand that consistent high performance, complete reliability and superior optical quality are extremely important to your LWIR application. State of the art manufacturing and sophisticated quality control allow us to ensure that each of our LWIR lenses meets and exceeds customer specifications. Each of our lenses is subject to stringent in-house testing, and we test for MTF, field of view, transmission, reflectivity, effective focal length (EFL), distortion, filed curvature, and astigmatism, as well as other standard optical quality measurements.
We are ISO 9001 certified, and every step of our manufacturing meets all quality, safety and efficiency standards. Every LWIR lens manufactured at our factory is checked against all relevant ISO and Mil standards and documentation is available on request.
Our in-stock options include manual focus, fixed focus and motorized LWIR lenses, and focal length ranges of our in shelf stock range from 3.8 to 250. Interface options include M34x0.5, M45x1, M34x0.5, M34x0.75, c-mount and flange, among other options. Back working distance of these lenses vary from 13.3 to 61.26.
We realize that the combinations listed in our catalogue may not exactly meet your requirements, and we’ve created a system that allows you to order exactly the lens you need. Along with our in-stock lenses, we have custom options that enable you to choose the exact specifications that meet your exact needs for long wave infrared optics. Our expert designers can work with you to select not only the ideal focal length, focus system, and interface for your application but also the substrate, physical design, and coatings which will provide optimal performance for your situation.
Germanium is often used for LWIR lenses. High durability, inert chemical properties, and a high Knoop hardness means it is often a good choice for abrasive environments. One potential drawback of germanium lenses is the high thermal drift it exhibits under certain circumstances, causing significant defocus with temperature change. Where temperature changes are expected, we recommend our ZnSe LWIR lenses, which exhibit much more stable focusing over large temperature change. Chalcogenide glasses transmit primarily in the midwave-infrared (MWIR) and LWIR wavebands, making them suitable for thermal imaging applications.
Our LWIR zoom lenses provide a crisp, high resolution image over the entire zoom lens, and are ideal for machine vision applications where detailed imagery is crucial. Both discrete and continuous zoom lenses are available.
